THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS IN MASSACHUSETTS

MISSION STATEMENT: "To Spread the Virtues of Columbianism, that is, Charity, Fraternity, Patriotism, and Unity."

Although the Knights of Columbus began their institutional life on 29 March 1882, it was not until 10 April 1892 that the Order came into existence in the Bay State with the establishment of Bunker Hill Council, No. 62. Founded as as benevolent, fraternal, and social organization of Catholic men by Father Michael J. McGivney (1852-1890), the Knights of Columbus is led today by Supreme Knight Virgil C. Dechant and numbers over 1,500,000 members throughout the world. Of these, about 50,000 belong to more than 200 councils existing throughout Massachusetts under the leadership of State Deputy James R. Sawyer. Dedicated to the principles of charity, fraternity, patriotism, and unity, the Order reflects a particular brand of lay Catholicism that has enriched the American Republic for more than a century.

CHARITY has been evident in the Knights of Columbus as a service organization. Originally concerned about the orphan and the widow, it is today contributing to the charities of the Catholic Church in the United States and around the world. In Massachusetts itself, the Order has been particularly concerned with the developmentally disabled by providing support for Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Brighton, the Cardinal Cushing School in Hanover, and the Mercy Center in Worcester, among a number of institutions.

FRATERNITY has been evident in the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal organization by providing brotherhood, respectability, and sociability. Offering insurance benefits to all its members regardless of racial, social, political, or economic considerations, the Order has demonstrated its concern for the brotherhood of all mankind by making available to scholars the resources of the Vatican Library, by bringing the Papacy to the world through television, and by insisting on the rights of the born and the unborn alike.

PATRIOTISM has been evident in the Knights of Columbus as a patriotic organization which emphasizes the compatibillity of Roman Catholicism with American institutions. It has supported projects in American history and campaigned successfully to insert the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. Having provided a home away from home for those serving in the armed forces during times of war, the Knights have strongly defended family values as essential to the survival of the American way of life and the pursuit of happiness.

UNITY has been evident in the Knights of Columbus as a lay religious organization in defense of Roman Catholicism. Inclined to espouse conservative positions on moral and theological questions, the Order has show itself liberal on social and economic ones. Having originally provided a Catholic minority in a hostile environment with security against religious bigotry, the Knights have raised their voices in defense of the aged, the disabled, and the unborn, in addition to protecting the rights of parents to educate their children and defending the rights of Catholics in totalitarian states to practice their faith.
